www.indiewire.com/article/redbox-digital-streaming-service-20160324The DVD rental service is taking its tiny storefront digital. Redbox, the DVD rental service popular circa 2012, is going digital according to a new report from Variety. Redbox Digital is already in the works, sources tell the outlet, with a closed beta apparently coming in the near future. This is not Redbox's first foray into the future of digital media, as they partnered with Verizon in 2013 to launch Redbox Instant. That service only lasted 18 months and acted as a direct competitor to the Netflix subscription model. Redbox Digital, on the other hand, is a video-on-demand storefront where content can be rented to stream, similar to Google Play and Amazon Prime. The service would allow current users of Redbox to tap into the existing loyalty program and earn points with every digital rental or purchase. There are plans to integrate the service into Redbox’s mobile apps, as well as Chromecast and Roku.
