Sundance Selects Acquires Documentary ‘Weiner’ About Anthony Weiner
Sundance Selects has acquired North American rights to the documentary “Weiner,” Variety has learned, about disgraced politician Anthony Weiner.
Directed by Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg, the film is set to premiere at Sundance in the U.S. documentary competition on Jan. 24.
Sundance Selects plans to open the picture in theaters on May 20, 2016, followed by a television run on Showtime in the fall.
“Weiner” takes place in 2013, when Weiner (trying to recover from a sexting scandal that forced him to resign from Congress in 2011) attempts a comeback run as mayor of New York. But his campaign doesn’t get far before new allegations derail his message of repentance, and the filmmakers chronicle this period with considerable access to the politician.
“Josh Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg have expertly crafted one of the most fascinating and insightful political documentaries of all time,” said Jonathan Sehring, president of Sundance Selects and its sister label IFC Films. “We are beyond excited for audiences to witness not only the unprecedented access they had to Anthony Weiner’s campaign but also the human tragedy it became.”
The filmmakers are also producers on the project. “Weiner” was executive produced by Julie Goldman, Christopher Clements and Carolyn Hepburn of Motto Pictures, and Lily Fan.
The deal was negotiated by Arianna Bocco, SVP of acquisitions from Sundance Selects/IFC Films, and Josh Braun from Submarine.
