RUMOR: ‘Iron Man 4’ May Be Released In 2020, But Without One Of The MCU’s Biggest Stars
Looks like the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist that started it all may be getting a fourth shot at the silver screen.
When Iron Man premiered back in 2008 audiences had no idea that it would be the beginning of a pop culture phenomenon the likes of which the world of entertainment had never seen before. Since then, the MCU has gained dozens of new characters, expanded to the depths of space and spread across several different media platforms.
Now as the world awaits the arrival of Marvel Studios highly anticipated “Phase 3” and Captain America: Civil War, the man who started it all might be returning for Iron Man 4.
Robert Downey Jr., a.k.a. Tony Stark, is the keystone for the MCU, and arguably the most popular actor in the entire Universe, so it’s no wonder the studio would be looking to bring him back for another go.
Unfortunately, that fourth run may not be happening for quite some time.
Marvel Studios original super lineup featured three unnamed films after the massive two-part Avengers: Infinity War, and while the Inhumans have apparently claimed the remaining 2019 spot, Mr. Stark may have hold of one of the other openings. This means that audiences wouldn’t get to see another solo Iron Man film until 2020.
While there will certainly be no shortage of Marvel films in the meantime, that’s over four years from now, and a lot can happen in four years.
Including a potential recasting.
Downey’s contract with Marvel Studios is set to end after Infinity War, so fans don’t need to worry about losing the real Tony Stark just yet. But what happens after the Mad Titian is defeated? There are hundreds of heroes in Marvel’s massive universe, so the studio could potentially retire the character and move on the fresh blood.
“Phase 3” is set to introduce a new set of heroes to the silver screen, so the Infinity War may serve to usher in the “new generation” of cinematic heroes. However, some have speculated that rather than give up the character, the studio may look to recast and reboot.
After his last appearance in Avenges: Age of Ultron, Downey asked for a pretty sizable pay hike that would boost his potential salary for Iron Man 4 to a whopping $150 million. That in and of itself may be enough for the studio to consider handing the suit over to someone else.
Nothing has been confirmed just yet so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Fans can watch RDJ don his iconic suit for the sixth time to take on Chris Evans in Captain America: Civil War, which is set to hit theaters May 6, 2016.
