‘Simpsons’ Animator Film Roman Bought by Waterman Entertainment
Waterman Entertainment has bought Film Roman — best known as the source animator for “The Simpsons” — for an undisclosed price from Starz Media.
Waterman is headed by Steve Waterman, who has exec producer credits on “Stuart Little” and “Alvin and the Chipmunks.”
Film Roman’s Dana Booton has been promoted from general manager to president of production and will continue to oversee the day-to-day business of the company, in addition to her new responsibilities of managing co-productions and development.
Additionally, founder Phil Roman is returning as chairman emeritus, serving in an advisory capacity and working closely with Booton, Waterman and the development team on the creative vision for the company and its subsequent projects.
Film Roman will no longer be a subsidiary of Starz, but will continue to do business with them.
“Film Roman is one of the defining names in animated content,” Waterman said. “Their track record is unparalleled and their team’s passion for executing top-shelf animation is evident in every frame they’ve created. Once it became clear how thoroughly our companies’ assets complemented each other, this deal was almost a foregone conclusion.”
Waterman said Film Roman has gained the necessary support to expand its business model to acquire, develop and produce original ideas/concepts for TV, feature film and digital media while absorbing Waterman’s development slate that includes such titles as “Brave Little Toaster,” “Heathcliff” and “Mr. Ed.”
Film Roman remains committed to their core business of operating as a studio for hire with work on marquee projects like “The Simpsons” and Marvels’ “Ultimate Spider-Man.”
“Now with Waterman, Film Roman enters a new phase where we have the additional resources required to fully support development of projects and new IP while continuing to work with our long time clients and productions,” Booton said. “Equally, we are delighted to welcome Phil back as our chairman emeritus and have his legend return to the studio he created. Phil hired and mentored many of our leading artists in the industry today.”
