Dan Gerrity, a veteran of the Los Angeles stage who appeared on many TV shows during his three-decade career, died Nov. 20 of a heart attack in Santa Fe, N.M. He was 59.
At the time of his death, Gerrity was the news director at public radio station KSFR-FM in Santa Fe, where he wrote and produced newscasts, read the news and interviewed politicians and civic leaders.
He also served on the board of the Santa Fe Playhouse and was in the midst of directing an upcoming production of A Christmas Carol.
A native of Red Bank, N.J., Gerrity appeared on such series as Cheers, Night Court, Dallas, The Adventures of Brisco County Jr., Knots Landing, Family Matters, Murder One, JAG, The King of Queens, Frasier and The West Wing.
Gerrity also had roles in such films as Swing Vote (2008), which starred Kevin Costner and was filmed in New Mexico, and Robert Redford's The Company You Keep (2012).
Some of Gerrity's first L.A. stage appearances were at the Odyssey Theatre, two coming in the Cliff Jones musical Something's Rockin' in Denmark (1981) and Ionescopade (1982), helmed by Bill Castellino.
In 1986 at the Tiffany Theater, he was a member of the four-man L.A. Drama Critics Circle-award-winning ensemble of John Godber's Bouncers, directed by the late Ron Link, before taking the show off-Broadway the next year.
From 1980-83, under the auspices of Center Theatre Group's Mark Taper Forum, Gerrity performed with the Improvisational Theater Project in schools throughout Southern California.
In 1988, he produced Shakers, Godber's women's counterpart to Bouncers, at the Odyssey. In 1990, he was nominated for a LADCC award for his featured performance in Stand-Up Tragedy at Mark Taper Forum.
Gerrity teamed with Jeremy Lawrence to adapt the David Galloway novel Melody Jones, A Striptease in Two Acts, premiering at the C.A.S.T. Theatre in 1992, garnering a production award from LADCC and a lead actor nomination for himself. It was revived in 1998, still with Gerrity in the lead, at Theatre/Theater.
He also starred in the productions of Twist of Fate and Delirious and performed with some of the first casts of Beach Blanket Babylon in San Francisco.
Gerrity in 2000 moved to Santa Fe, where he had been living with his partner, Tom Mason-Mancuso, who survives him.
