Indie distributor The Orchard has closed a deal with Duplass Brothers Productions to take worldwide theatrical and other rights to a slate of seven upcoming feature films produced by Jay and Mark Duplass. The films are included in the exclusive SVOD deal the Duplasses signed with Netflix at Sundance in January, in which the streaming services will finance four movies that will get short theatrical windows before each will be offered to Netflix subscribers.
This is the other shoe to drop from that tie-up, with The Orchard netting worldwide theatrical, digital rental and sales, cable/satellite VOD, airline, DVD and soundtrack rights. The brothers and The Orchard are also fresh off their latest success, The Overnight, the Sundance 2015 pic that wrapped its opening weekend yesterday with the top per-screen average in its platform debut. It made $20,507 in three theaters in New York and L.A. Taylor Schilling, Adam Scott and Jason Schwartzman star.
The first film coming under the new Orchard deal is the horror comedy Creep, the co-production with Blumhouse which bows on iTunes starting tomorrow starring Mark Duplass and Patrick Brice, director of The Overnight and helmer on this one too. Other titles in the pact include Hannah Fidell’s Six Years starring Taissa Farmiga and J. Davis’ Manson Family Vacation
starring Jay Duplass.
The brothers continue their deal hot streak after last week inking an exclusive two-year deal at HBO, where they have two series: Togetherness (recently renewed for Season 2) and the upcoming animated comedy Animals.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better working relationship with Jay and Mark on The Overnight — they have been amazing collaborators who share our passion for telling compelling stories, fostering new talent and finding disruptive new ways to reach audiences,” said The Orchard’s SVP of Film & TV Paul Davidson. “Needless to say, we are pumped to expand our partnership with them on this great slate of exciting new films.”
The Duplass-Orchard deal was negotiated by Jessica Lacy at ICM Partners and Josh Braun at Submarine Entertainment with Danielle DiGiacomo from The Orchard. The Duplass brothers are repped by ICM Partners.
