www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/sp-releasing-sony-pictures-home-792613SP Releasing and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have inked a multi-year deal for worldwide film distribution. Under the new deal, SP Releasing will acquire and distribute films theatrically in North America, and Sony will distribute SP's slate in the home entertainment and digital windows, both domestically and internationally. "We now have the strength of a major studio behind us for home entertainment distribution," SP Releasing chairman Steven Paul said. "SPHE is consistently one of the best distribution powerhouses worldwide, and we’re thrilled to be in business with the studio." Added SPHE president Man Jit Singh: "Given Steven's extensive production track record, we are excited to bring SP Releasing’s upcoming slate through our pipeline." Jason Price, who is heading up acquisitions and productions for SP Releasing, said the move will allow the company to be aggressive at next month's Cannes Film Festival. The plan with any Cannes acquisitions is to open them theatrically on 200-1,000 screens, with a prints-and-advertising commitment. Paul has financed and produced more than 100 films, and he is currently in production on Ghost in the Shell, starring Scarlett Johansson. He also has ties to Sony, having worked with Columbia Pictures in 1971, when he was brought to California at the age of 12 to star in Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s Happy Birthday Wanda June. He also worked with the studio on the Ghost Rider and Baby Geniuses films.
