‘True Detective’ Director Cary Fukunaga Boards A24’s Jadin Bell Drama
“True Detective” director Cary Fukunaga and A24 are teaming on an untitled drama based on the story of Jadin Bell, a 15-year-old gay high schooler who took his own life after being bullied.
Fukunaga will direct from a script by “Brokeback Mountain” writers Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, based on Bell’s 2013 suicide and his father Joe’s subsequent walk across America to promote awareness about the consequences of prejudice.
It’s the first project to be developed from script to screen by A24, which is producing along with Fukunaga’s Parliament of Owls production company, Daniela Taplin Lundberg and Riva Marker of Red Crown Productions, and Eva Maria Daniels of VisionChaos Productions. Daniel Crown of Red Crown will exec produce.
“Joe and Jadin Bell’s story is a poignant reminder of how precious life is, and a life-affirming example of love transcending the prejudice and victimization familiar to many,” said A24.
Fukunaga most recently directed the upcoming drama “Beasts of No Nation,” produced by Red Crown and acquired by Netflix last month. Fukunaga made his feature film writing and directing debut with “Sin Nombre” and won an Emmy for directing the first season of HBO’s “True Detective,” which he exec produced.
Fukunaga is also in pre-production on the bigscreen adaptation on Stephen King’s “It” for New Line Cinema as a two-part film set to begin production this summer.
McMurtry and Ossana won an Oscar for adapted screenplay for “Brokeback Mountain.”
Fukunaga is repped by WME. The writers are represented by UTA, Anonymous Content and attorneys Robert Thorne and Greg Redlitz.
