Peter Cronkite, Walter Cronkite's Grandson, Commits Suicide at 22
Peter Cronkite, grandson of the legendary news anchor Walter Cronkite, has died. He was 22.
Peter, who was set to graduate next month from Maine's Colby College, committed suicide on April 26, according to his obituary in the New York Times.
"Peter’s death is devastating to his family, his many friends and the entire Colby community," Colby president David A. Greene wrote on the school's website. "Our hearts are heavy as we try to come to terms with this tremendous loss."
Peter grew up in New York City and was majoring in classical civilization with a minor in cinema studies. He was the sports editor for the school's Colby Echo newspaper and played for its rugby team. He was set to receive the Foster Prize for distinction in his major upon graduation.
Peter worked for the New York Mets at Citi Field during the summer of 2014 and for Sports Illustrated during the 2012 Olympics. He voiced the title character in 2002's TV movie Dennis the Menace: Cruise Control, which premiered on Nickelodeon and featured Tom Arnold's voice as Mr. Wilson.
"His love of participating in athletics, which had been an important part of his life since he was very young, combined with his intelligence and kind, incredibly likeable personality, won him scores of friends and admirers at Colby," Greene continued. "I know I am not the only person for whom this raises intense emotions."
Peter is survived by his parents and his brother.
