Edward T. Callaghan, Arts and Entertainment Publicist, Dies at 66
Edward T. Callaghan, a noted arts and entertainment publicist in New York City, died April 25 of complications from cancer at his home in Manhattan, his brother said. He was 66.
Callaghan represented many celebrities over the years, including Patti LaBelle, Rosie O’Donnell and Loretta Devine.
In the early 1980s, his expertise helped relaunch Kaufman-Astoria Studios, which reinvigorated film and TV production in New York. In that disco-driven era, he also represented such clubs as The Limelight, The China Club, The Tunnel and The Red Parrot as well as the comedy outpost Catch a Rising Star.
Callaghan created special event opportunities for Harry Winston Jewelers, particularly the company’s “dressing” of Academy Award contenders and presenters, and represented hundreds of Broadway, off-Broadway and touring productions.
Callaghan began as publicity and marketing director of the now-defunct Entermedia Theater. He then worked in partnership with Jacqueline Burnham Kurta at their company, Burnham-Callaghan Associates, throughout the 1980s.
He teamed with his life and business partner, John Wegorzewski, in Alchimia Public Relations & Marketing for the past 15 years, working with fine artists, art galleries and art festivals.
Callaghan was born and raised in The Bronx and attended Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y. He taught seventh and eighth graders at Our Lady of Victory in the South Bronx before going into PR.
In addition to Wegorzewski and his brother John, survivors include his sister Terry.
A wake and funeral mass will be held starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday at Church of Our Savior in New York.
