The award is a grant given in partnership with the Tribeca Film Institute and Candescent Films. Created by Candescent’s Lilly Hartley, the award goes to “powerful social-issue films” that screen at the festival and have been supported during production by the TFI. “The Wolfpack,” which debuted in January at Sundance, will make its New York debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday. Magnolia Pictures will release it in theaters on June 12. Directed by Crystal Moselle, “The Wolfpack” centers on six teenage brothers who have spent their lives locked in a Manhattan housing project. All they know of the outside is gleaned from the movies they obsessively watch. “We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with Candescent Films and award the Candescent Award to ‘The Wolfpack,’ a film that explores powerful social issues through a captivating, character-driven story,” said Ryan Harrington, VP of artist programs at TFI. Other Candescent-supported projects screening at the festival include “Cartel Land” and “(T)error.” Previous recipients of the award include “Time is Illmatic” and “The Yes Men are Revolting.” Candescent-supported projects include “The Queen of Versailles,” “Likeness” starring Elle Fanning, HBO’s “Private Violence,” Javier Bardem’s “Sons of the Clouds” and Gael Garcia Bernal’s “Who is Dayani Cristal?”
