Studio 8 Picks Up Short ‘The Brain Hack’ For Feature Treatment
Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8 has picked up another project as it is hitting the ground running since the company joined with Sony and Chinese investor Fosun Group. Studio 8 has just acquired the feature rights to high-concept thriller The Brain Hack from writer-director Joe White. The story is about two students who create a way to induce hallucinogenic visions of God and then are stalked by a mysterious cult bent on destroying them. The film screened Saturday at the Los Angeles Short Film Festival. The project will be produced for the big screen by 3 Arts’ Erwin Stoff, Will Rowbotham and Richard Abate. Studio 8 next will hire a screenwriter to work with White, who is also expected to direct the feature version.
White is a U.K.-born and NYC-based filmmaker who has been working as a commercials director and visual effects animator for the past ten years. He helped create the onscreen graphics for Skyfall. As a commercial director, his campaigns include spots for Nike, Samsung, Pringles and HTC. His design and animation work includes TV ads for Coke Zero, Virgin Media, Adidas and Dior.
Studio 8 has been on a buying spree of late, picking up the spec drama White Boy Rick as well as The Shoe from Still Alice writer-directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland and the Ang Lee-directed Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, which is Studio 8’s first picture in production. The company recently partnered with Tom Rothman’s TriStar and Film4 on that film, which is casting to go before the cameras next month. And then it also has Pontius Pilate, a script by Woman On Top scribe Vera Blasi.
