Dick Crew, ‘PM Magazine’ Producer, Dies at 72
Dick Crew, the television producer who spearheaded the innovative syndicated series “PM Magazine,” died Feb. 14 in Seattle. He was 72.
Crew spent five years at the helm of “PM Magazine,” which blended local reports and national segments into a newsmagazine format that aired in the early evenings on stations around the county. During the late 197s and ’80s “PM Magazine” was a breeding ground for future news stars including Matt Lauer and Leeza Gibbons.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, Crew grew up in Alma, Mich. and got his professional start in Pittsburgh where he was a producer and director for KDKA-TV.
After “PM Magazine,” he opened his own production company, Dick Crew Prods., and also worked as a producer for the USA Network and the SciFi Channel. At the SciFi Channel he produced a series of hour-long documentaries on science fiction writers and film makers, and won a Cine Eagle award for “Masters of Fantasy: Arthur C. Clarke.”
In 1999 he closed down his production company to begin a second career as a college professor, teaching communications at schools in Seattle, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. and in Beijing.
Crew’s survivors include his wife, Carole, two children and a grandson.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 21, at 1 p.m. at the Coupeville United Methodist Church on Whidbey Island in Washington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Seattle Public Libraries Foundation, or to the Dr. Kaplan Research Fund at Swedish Medical Center Foundation.
