‘Shooter’ Drama From Mark Wahlberg & John Hlavin Gets USA Pilot Commitment
Another high-profile project about an American sniper is taking a major step to the screen. USA Network has given a pilot commitment to Shooter, a drama series adaptation of the 2007 Paramount feature, which is being executive produced by the film’s star Mark Wahlberg, his frequent collaborator Stephen Levinson and Lorenzo di Bonaventura for Paramount TV and Universal Cable Prods.
Written by John Hlavin (Underworld: Awakening, The Shield) and based on the bestselling Bob Lee Swagger novel Point Of Impact by Stephen Hunter and the 2007 movie, the action drama centers on a highly decorated Marine sniper living in exile who is coaxed back into action after learning of a plot to kill the president. Ultimately double-crossed and framed for the attempt, he goes on the run to track the real killer and find out who exactly set him up, and why.
“Shooter takes a fascinating look at a realistic conspiracy and an American hero who emerges from it,” said Jackie de Crinis, EVP Original Programming, USA Network. “The script is topical and suspenseful.”
The project was originally set up at TNT last September with Hlavin, Wahlnerg and Paramount TV. I hear Paramount negotiated an early release of the script, and took it to USA whose executives jumped on it. It will now undergo further development with a big penalty attached if it doesn’t go to pilot.
In addition to being a recognizable title as a book and a movie directed by Antoine Fuqua, Shooter is touching upon a theme that is very much in the cultural zeitgeist on the heels of the blockbuster success of Clint Eastwood’s feature American Sniper. USA’s broadcast sibling NBC just greenlighted six-hour miniseries The Reaper from the Weinstein Co. based on the recently released memoir by former U.S. Army sniper Nicholas Irving.
Hlavin is repped by UTA, 3 Arts and attorney Karl Austen. Paramount TV also is co-producing Fox’s drama pilot Minority Report.
