Berlin: eOne Buys Gus Van Sant's 'Sea of Trees,' Bill Condon's 'Mr. Holmes'
Entertainment One Films Canada inked deals for four films at the Berlin Film Festival, including multiple territory deals for Gus Van Sant's Sea of Trees and Bill Condon's Mr. Holmes.
The Toronto-based distributor sewed up the Canadian, UK and Australian rights to Van Sant's psychological drama that stars Matthew McConaughey and Noami Watts. eOne picked up the film about two strangers who meet at the base of Japan’s Mount Fuji and embark on a journey of reflection and survival from Bloom, the sales company run by Alex Walton and Ken Kao.
Also in Berlin, eOne snapped up the UK and Canadian rights to Mr. Holmes, Condon's new take on the classic Sherlock Holmes tale, from FilmNation. Miramax earlier acquired all U.S. rights to Mr. Holmes, which stars Ian McKellen and Laura Linney, and will partner with Roadside Attractions on the theatrical release stateside.
Other Berlin deals include nabbing the Canadian rights to Stephen Frears' Florence Foster Jenkins, which stars Meryl Streep in the true-life story of a New York heiress and socialite aspiring to be an opera star, despite her poor singing. eOne earlier picked up the Australian rights to the dramedy which also stars Hugh Grant, from Pathe at AFM, and shook hands on the Canadian rights deal in Berlin.
And the indie distributor inked a deal in Berlin for the Canadian rights to Brimstone, a Canada-Holland-Germany co-production from writer-director Martin Koolhoven (Winter in Wartime) that stars Guy Pearce, Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattinson and Carice van Houten.
Pearce plays a new preacher hunting a heroine on the run (Wasikowska). The period western thriller will be shot in Canada and Europe later this year, with Film Farm, Els Vandervorst and Isabella Films producing.
Film Farm and CAA are handling international sales.
