CEG Rights’ catalog includes scores for “Whiplash,” “Fury,” “John Wick,” “Drive,” “Non-Stop” and “The King’s Speech” and is derived from films that have collectively grossed more than $2 billion at the box office. The deal marks Kobalt’s first acquisition of a publishing administration business. Kobalt, which specializes in collecting royalties, will also administer the master recordings of the scores and will work with Cutting Edge Group to find secondary uses for the existing catalog as well as pick up new scores. Kobalt already administers the music catalogs of National Geographic and Air-Edel outside the U.K. It also publishes Disney’s entire music catalog in Australasia. Cutting Edge Group has provided investment capital and music services to more than 400 feature films. Its companies include soundtrack specialist Varese Sarabande Records and Cord Worldwide, a music planning and buying business for global brands such as Apple, Shell, Nestle and Unilever and ad agencies J. Walter Thompson and McCann.
