Variety, Medienboard Present Europeans to Watch at the Berlin Film Festival
BERLIN — Variety and funding body Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg presented the first-ever “10 Europeans to Watch,” a showcase of exciting new talents across various disciplines, at Saturday’s Medienboard party at the Ritz-Carlton in Berlin.
Kirsten Niehuus, Medienboard’s managing director of film funding, explained to Variety why her organization had backed the initiative: “Since the scene in Berlin is still pretty young, one of our focuses is on young talent in Berlin, and on the international side of things it’s important to us to not only be a German hub of filmmaking but to invite young talents from all over Europe to Berlin because we feel it really adds to the filmmaking and creativity of the city.”
Variety international director Alberto Lopez introduced some of the “10 Europeans to Watch” to the reception’s guests. These were novelist, filmmaker Helene Hegemann, producer Gian-Piero Ringel, producer Ginevra Elkann, director Tom Sommerlatte, director-writer Mara Eibl-Eibesfeldt, and director/writer Ole Giaever. The “European to Watch” that couldn’t make it to Berlin were director Yann Demange, actress Cara Delevingne, screenwriter/director Veronika Franz, and director Carlos Marques-Marcet.
Among the VIP guests attending the Medienboard event were Andreas Dresen, director of Berlin competition entry “As We Were Dreaming,” Wim Wenders, the director of competition entry “Every Thing Will Be Fine,” and his wife Donata Wenders, and director Sebastian Schipper and the actors of the Berlin competition film “Victoria.”
Also among the attendees were director Oliver Hirschbiegel and the team behind Berlinale competition entry “13 Minutes,” and actors Tom Schilling, Wotan Wilke Möhring and Elyas M’Barek, who star in Baran bo Odar’s hacker thriller “Who Am I.”
