Compact Media Group has signed a long-term exclusive contract with DreamWorks Animation to administer and collect audio-visual retransmission fees and ancillary rights revenues.
Titles represented exclusively by Compact include “Turbo,” “Mr. Peabody and Sherman,” “Penguins of Madagascar” and “The Croods.”
The deal is the first major movie studio pact for London-based Compact, which has a core business of collections in the market for secondary rights — an overall market it estimates at $500 million per year in royalties from private copy, public performance, educational copying, cable and satellite retransmission. It is currently handling $30 million to $40 million in royalties each quarter.
Compact CEO David Johnson said, “We are proud to be working with the team at DreamWorks to ensure they receive maximum financial value from its global offering through our personalized & tailored service. DreamWorks Animation is a pioneer, a household name and synonymous with first class family entertainment.”
Existing clients include FremantleMedia; Lakeshore Entertainment; Goldcrest International; Henson; Myriad Pictures; Mark Burnett Productions; A&E; National Geographic; Shine Group; Entertainment One; Echo Bridge; ITV Global and BBC Worldwide.
London-based Compact, established in 1996, launched in L.A. in 2008 to give companies a means to collect royalties for U.S. producers arising from foreign telecasts and other exploitation of copyrighted material. Since a 2010 investment from Lyceum Capital MBO, it’s more than doubled its client base from 300 clients to nearly 700.
DreamWorks Animation announced Jan. 22 that it was cutting 500 jobs and reducing its annual film output from three to two in order to improve profitability after a string of disappointments at the box office.
