variety.com/2015/biz/news/sony-to-cut-additional-1000-phone-jobs-say-reports-1201417231/TOKYO – Sony plans to cut 1,000 jobs from its smartphone division, principally in Asia and Europe, the Nikkei newspaper has reported. The cutback will be in addition to 1,000 cuts, primarily in China, announced in October. Following the 30% reduction in headcount, which is scheduled for completion by the end of March 2016, the smartphone division will be down to about 5,000 employees. Through these and other cost-cutting measures Sony intends to move its smartphone business into the black by the 2016 fiscal year. Hit by sliding sales in China and elsewhere, Sony’s handset business is expected to record a $1.69 billion (JPY200 billion) operating loss in the current financial year, which ends March 31, 2015. The company has not yet officially announced the loss total or the additional cuts.
