deadline.com/2015/01/tom-cruise-doug-liman-mena-universal-1201350391/‘Edge’ Guys Tom Cruise, Doug Liman Eye Drug Pilot Tale ‘Mena’ Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman are in talks to re-team on Mena, a Gary Spinelli scripted drama that Universal Pictures bought last year in a $1 million spec deal. The film will be produced by Doug Davison with Imagine’s Brian Grazer, and with Kim Roth exec producing. Cross Creek is financing this and Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson and also producing. The spec is a fact-based tale about Barry Seal, a pilot who, in the 1980s, was a gun runner, and drug trafficker who transported contraband for the CIA and the Medellin cartel. He was eventually shot to death by the latter in Baton Rouge. The title refers to Mena, Arkansas, where a lot of the illegal activity took place, under the noses of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and then-Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton. Cruise is an accomplished pilot in his own right. If this all comes together, the film would shoot sometime this year. Cruise and Liman made Edge Of Tomorrow.

variety.com/2015/film/news/domhnall-gleeson-tom-cruise-doug-liman-mena-1201477546/Domhnall Gleeson Joins Tom Cruise in Doug Liman’s ‘Mena’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” actor Domhnall Gleeson is in talks to join Tom Cruise in the Universal, Imagine and Cross Creek co-production “Mena.” If a deal closes, Gleeson would join Sarah Wright, who is on board to join the cast with Doug Liman set to direct. Brian Grazer will produce for his Imagine Entertainment along with Cross Creek’s Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson as well as Doug Davidson. Pic is based on the spec by Gary Spinelli and follows Barry Seal, a TWA pilot recruited by the CIA to provide reconnaissance on the burgeoning communist threat in Central America. Seal finds himself in charge of one of the biggest covert CIA operations in the history of the U.S., one that spawned the birth of the Medellin cartel and eventually almost brought down the Reagan White House through the Iran Contra scandal. Cross Creek will finance the pic. Kim Roth will exec produce and oversee the project for Imagine, with senior VP of production Kristin Lowe overseeing for Universal. Jason Seagrave will oversee on behalf of Cross Creek. Gleeson has a busy year ahead with both “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “The Revenant,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, both bowing at Christmas. He can currently be seen in A24’s “Ex Machina” alongside Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander. He is repped by the Agency and Paradigm.
