Films Boutique Picks Up Peter Greenaway’s ‘Eisenstein in Guanajuato’
LONDON – Films Boutique has acquired world sales rights to Peter Greenaway’s “Eisenstein in Guanajuato,” which will have its world premiere in competition at the Berlin Film Festival.
Pic charts the sensual awakening in Mexico of Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein, who is best known for “Battleship Potemkin.” It stars Finnish actor Elmer Back as Eisenstein and Mexican actor Luis Alberti (“La Jaula de Oro”) as his Mexican guide Palomino Canedo.
Film is set in 1931, when Eisenstein is at the height of his artistic powers, but has been rejected by Hollywood, and is under increasing pressure to return to the Soviet Union. He travels to Guanajuato in Mexico to shoot a new film, where — chaperoned by Canedo — he falls under Mexico’s spell and finds inspiration. Greenaway’s film explores the mind of the movie master as he faces his desires and his fear of love, sex and death through 10 passionate days that helped shape the rest of his career.
Greenaway, who received the outstanding British contribution to cinema Award at last year’s BAFTAs, is best known for films like “The Draughtsman’s Contract,” “The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover” and “Drowning by Numbers.”
“Eisenstein in Guanajuato” is produced by Bruno Felix and Femke Wolting for Submarine and San Fu Matha for Fu Works, both Dutch companies, and Cristina Velasco for Mexico’s Paloma Negra. It is co-produced by Edith Films from Finland, and Potemkino and Mollywood, both from Belgium. Pic will be distributed in Benelux by Cinemien.
Films Boutique CEO’s Jean-Christophe Simon said in a statement: “We are very happy and proud to collaborate with Peter Greenaway and with Submarine. ‘Eisenstein in Guanajuato’ is a very unique film, managing to be a moving historical drama, but also a modern comedy full of black British humor. It is a declaration of love to cinema and theater and, of course, to the creativity of Eisenstein.”
Felix and Wolting said in a joint statement: “ ‘Eisenstein in Guanajuato’ is a film touching many different subjects and with rich storytelling. We are convinced Films Boutique is the perfect sales agent to bring it to the right audiences all over the world.”
The deal was signed by Felix, Wolting and Simon.
