YouTube Star Grace Helbig’s Talkshow Gets Series Order From E!
In a major example of YouTube talent jumping from the computer screen to television, E! has picked up a weekly comedy talkshow headed by YouTube star Grace Helbig to series, with the show set to premiere in April.
“The Grace Helbig Project” (working title) will feature Helbig riffing on pop culture trends, as well as conducting celebrity interviews. E! calls the show a “call to action” for the network’s social-media-savvy audience, promising an interactive experience over Twitter, Vine and Instagram.
“This show is a fresh take on the conventional talk show with a very unconventional host who has already captured an enormous fanbase of young viewers on the Web,” said Jeff Olde, E! Entertainment executive vice president, original programming and development, in a statement. “As we continue to seek out programming that offers a rich multiplatform experience, we are excited to launch this forward-thinking talk show that speaks so perfectly to our audience and to the core of E!’s pop culture brand.”
“Congratulations to E! for giving an Internet-obsessed introvert a talk show,” Helbig said. “I’m looking forward to working with humans.”
Helbig is best known for her YouTube channel “It’s Grace,” which boasts more than 2 million subscribers. She’s recently moved on to ventures beyond YouTube, though — she starred in and exec produced comedy “Camp Takota,” which was picked up by Netflix in November, as well as travel series “HeyUSA” for Conde Nast. Her book, “Grace’s Guide: The Art of Pretending to Be a Grown-up,” earned her the No. 1 spot on the New York Times bestseller list.
Variety named Helbig one of its 10 Comics to Watch last year.
E! is possibly looking to fill the void left by Chelsea Handler with this move, as Handler’s talkshow “Chelsea Lately” ended in August.
Helbig is repped by WME.
