Indie Film and TV Player IM Global Launches Music Joint Venture
This story first appeared in the Dec. 19 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
Indie film and TV player IM Global is singing a new tune. The 7-year-old company has formed a joint venture with veteran music and private equity executive David Schulhof to administer and market music used in its films as well as partner with record labels for soundtrack albums.
The new division also will develop music-driven film and TV projects, which includes acquiring songwriter catalogs for biopic-worthy material.
Imagem, the publisher that owns the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization and is for sale (asking price: €650 million, or $800 million), "is something we're considering," says Schulhof, who is coming onboard as president of IM Global Music and will report to IM Global founder and CEO Stuart Ford.
The move represents further diversification into the entertainment market by IM Global parent Reliance ADA, one of India's biggest conglomerates, which also invests in DreamWorks.
"We want to have our own soup-to-nuts platform where we can leverage the music assets that we have while defraying the cost of music production," says Schulhof, co-founder of music publishing company Evergreen Copyrights, former Miramax vp music (there, he created a joint venture with Capitol Records to release soundtracks for the Scary Movie and Scream franchises) and current managing director at G2 Investment Group, a spinoff of Guggenheim Partners (parent company of The Hollywood Reporter). "We wouldn't just sign a songwriter in a vacuum, but we would sign one we thought could write a main or end title."
