The casting is the first concrete attachment to the project, which had seen both Shia LaBeouf and Jesse Eisenberg flirt with it. However, Eisenberg’s availability recently shifted (the actor is playing Lex Luthor in the studio’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and commitments to that movie, as well as potentially appearing in another DC Entertainment-based movie Suicide Squad, took him out of the running). LaBeouf also moved on, although his talks never progressed beyond courting into deal-making, The studio then turned to Hill to jump in. The Wolf of Wall Street actor was already well acquainted with the project as he did table reads months ago when the script, co-written by Phillips and Jason Smilovic, was still being worked on. Dudes is based on Guy Lawson's Rolling Stone article, which follows two stoners from Miami Beach who ended up becoming arms dealers for the U.S. government. variety.com/2015/film/news/knock-knock-actress-in-talks-for-todd-phillips-arms-and-the-dudes-1201432581/Knock Knock’ Actress in Talks for Todd Phillips’ ‘Arms and the Dudes’ Ana de Armas is in talks for the female lead in the Warner Bros. black comedy “Arms and the Dudes,” directed by Todd Phillips. Jonah Hill and Miles Teller will star. Based on the Rolling Stone article by Guy Lawson, the story follows two unlikely arms dealers who received a $300 million contract to supply weapons for U.S. allies in Afghanistan. They soon found themselves in danger abroad and in trouble back home because they were completely out of their depth. Jesse Ehrman and Jon Gonda are overseeing for the studio. The film is the first under the new production banner Phillips formed with his “Hangover” star Bradley Cooper. Cooper will produce along with Mark Gordon, who first acquired the article and brought it to Phillips. Bryan Zuriff is exec producing, with Jason Smilovic penning the script. Phillips and Stephen Chin had also written a version of the screenplay. Phillips decided to test actresses for the part of Teller’s girlfriend rather than cast a more established name, but looks to have made a promising decision since de Armas gained attention co-starring with Keanu Reeves in Eli Roth’s “Knock Knock,” which bowed at Sundance. Besides “Knock Knock,” Armas is also appearing in another Reeves pic, “Daughter of God,” which is in post-production. She is repped by CAA, Impression Entertainment and Grubman Indursky Shire & Meiselas.
