deadline.com/2014/11/rec-4-apocalypse-magnet-us-release-1201286858/Magnet Presses Play On ‘[REC] 4: Apocalypse’ Magnolia’s genre arm Magnet Releasing has acquired U.S. rights to [REC] 4: Apocalypse, the fourth installment in the Spanish horror franchise about an epidemic of demonic possession that’s captured on camera. Sony put out the first REC film in 2007 and remade it as Quarantine, but Magnet has been aboard the series since releasing the second and third films stateside. Jaume Balagueró returned to direct [REC] 4 after co-directing the first two films following a third entry that curiously veered away from the franchise’s found-footage thrills and into horror-comedy terrain. [REC] 4 picks up after the events of the second film as young reporter Angela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) wakes up in a high-security quarantine deep within an ocean freighter and must battle the virus on the high seas. Balagueró co-scripted with Manu Díez and Julio Fernandez and Castelao Pictures produced the pic, which debuted in the Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section and will open day-and-date on January 2. Magnet VP Acquisitions Peter Van Steemburg negotiated the deal.
