Lexie Houghtaling covers the Bakersfield Comic Con, which in seven years has grown from 400 attendees to more than 2,500. “We keep it at a $5 admission, so families can afford it. This is cheaper than going to McDonald’s and getting Happy Meals! It’s a day of fun with actors, artists, and panels,” says promoter Steve Wyatt. Next year the con will move to a bigger venue, the local fairgrounds

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) - The seventh annual Bakersfield Comic-Con was the biggest one yet.
The first year of the event hosted only 400 people, and now the event hosts more than 2,500 people. While it might be best known in San Diego, Comic-Con is making its own name here in Bakersfield.
We usually see the characters in the comic books, but here at Comic-Con they come to life. Thousands of people came dressed as their favorite comic character. Many people dressed as Iron Man, the Joker, Batman and Spider-Man, among others.
The promoter, Steve Wyatt, is a lifelong comic book fan. He moved to Bakersfield 10 years ago and started his own Comic-Con.
“We keep it at a $5 admission, so families can afford it. This is cheaper than going to McDonald’s and getting Happy Meals! It’s a day of fun with actors, artists, and panels,” said Wyatt.
Wyatt said the biggest difference between the San Diego Comic-Con and here, is Bakersfield’s emphasis on comic books.
The event had thousands of comic books for sale and display. The comic books ranged in all prices, with some topping $1,000.
Due to the growing popularity of Bakersfield Comic-Con, the event will be held at the fair grounds next year - Nov. 22, 2015.
