Last year, 3,000 people came to Rose City Comic Con in Tyler, Texas; this year, organizers expect 8,000.

Like the fiery-eye of Sauron beckoning ring-bearers to Mordor, celebrities, cosplayers and nerds of all ages will descend on Tyler for the second Rose City Comic Con.
Comic Con will feature celebrities, vendors, gaming areas, and question-and-answer sessions that will draw from a wide array of popular culture, such as science fiction, fantasy, comic books, television and gaming.
“It’s great fun,” said Michael Stewart, a former Tylerite who will be taking part as a video game designer. “People get to come out and have a good time.”
Stewart, who lived in Tyler 1990 to 1994, said he is looking forward to being part of Rose City Comic Con.
“I was involved in a couple of cons (conventions) out here — mostly gaming and fan conventions — in the late ‘80s, and the attendance (at those events) was nothing compared to last year’s con (Rose City Comic Con),” Stewart said. “The reception the con has gotten has been great. Last year, people kept saying, ‘isn’t it amazing that we got something like this in the Tyler area?’”
He noted that before then fans had to go to either Dallas or Houston to attend a serious comic con event.
Stewart said that Rose City Comic Con is different than comic cons at some of the other cities.
“You get a good mix of a large attendance, a large variety in the dealer rooms and the symposiums, but it still kinda’ has a feeling of small time because you don’t feel like you’re lost in the crowd.”
Jennyfer Keohane, Rose City Comic Con board member, said nearly 3,000 people attended the comic con last year and that the convention is estimated to have brought in about $200,000 to the economy.
Organizers this year predict that about 8,000 people will attend.
One of the highlights of the convention will be question-and-answer sessions with celebrities.
Actor Theo Crane, who appeared as “Big Tiny” on the hit TV show “The Walking Dead,” will take part in one such session at Rose City Comic Con.
“I’m always getting asked ‘What’s Norman Reedus like?’” he said. Reedus plays “Daryl” who is one of the more popular characters on the AMC show.
Erin Marie Hogan, of “Paranormal Entity” fame, said she’s most often asked about her experience of being in the 2009 movie.
“I’m always asked about ‘Paranormal Entity,’” she said. “I don’t mind it; I love talking to people especially passionate fans.”
This year’s comic con will be Mrs. Hogan’s first time in Texas. She said she looks forward to it.
“I’ve always heard about how pretty Texas is and how nice the people are,” she said.
