Mipcom Asia briefs: BBC/NHK, Celestial Tiger/Media Asia, ‘Lupin III’ Series Reboot
Japanese and British public broadcasters NHK and the BBC are to co-produce natural history series “Wild Japan.” A three-part, blue-chip documentary series, it will explore the diverse and untamed regions in Japan, the creatures that inhabit them, and show how the Japanese people have learned to live in unpredictable landscapes.
The BBC’s Natural History Unit and NHK, will contribute equally in terms of editorial staff, film crews, and equipment. The series will be shot largely in 4K. Post-production will be done in 4K and 2K, and the series will be available in both formats and air globally in 2015-2016.
Pan-Asian channel operator Celestial Tiger Entertainment, has renewed its exclusive, multi-year output deal with Hong Kong movie studio Media Asia. The deal secures first and exclusive pay TV rights, as well as pay-per-view, video-on-demand (VOD) and over-the-top (OTT) rights of Media Asia’s upcoming movies for CTE’s channels in Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore.
Upcoming movies from Media Asia include action epic “Helios”; Johnnie To’s “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart 2”; and “Wine War,” a drama starring Leon Lai, Zhang Hanyu and Jennifer Du.
Japan’s Telecom Animation Film is to produce a new animated TV series based on the iconic “Lupin III” franchise about a stylish master thief. The action takes the new series to Italy and San Marino and the series will bow on Mediaset’s RTI before airing in Japan. It is the first time in 30 years that the comic book series has been set as a TV series. A feature-length “Lupin” animation and a live-action film have been released this year. The latter was a box office hit, despite a slating from critics.
