Magnolia Pictures and CNN Films have acquired U.S. rights to the doc “Sunshine Superman,” following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Magnolia bought theatrical, VOD and home entertainment rights while CNN Films acquired TV rights.
Helmer-writer Marah Strauch’s feature bow uses exclusive archival 16mm footage and new interviews to tell the story of BASE-jumping pioneer and cinematographer Carl Boenish. “BASE” stands for Building, Antenna, Span, and Earth.
The doc, a major crowd-pleaser at its Toronto opening weekend screenings, was produced and edited by Eric Bruggemann (“Why We Fight Now”).
CNN Films will broadcast the film exclusively on the network in 2016, following a 2015 theatrical release by Magnolia.
Production companies are A Scissor Kick Films, Flimmer Films, and Submarine Entertainment. Producers are Eric Bruggemann, Marah Strauch for Scissor Kick Films and Lars Loge for Flimmer Films. Alex Gibney, Josh Braun, Dan Braun and Samantha Horley are the exec producers.
The deal was negotiated by Josh Braun, Dan Braun and David Koh of Submarine on behalf of the producers with Dori Begley and John Van Thaden on behalf of Magnolia, and Vinnie Malhotra and Stacey Wolf on behalf of CNN Films. Evan Krauss of Gray Krauss Stratford Sandler Des Rochers provided legal services on behalf of the producers.
Two days before the film’s Sept. 4 world premiere in Toronto, Salt Company brokered a deal for international rights with Universal Pictures International Entertainment.
“Sunshine” has its final Toronto play Sept. 14, and will screen next month at the New York Film Festival.
