deadline.com/2014/08/childhoods-end-miniseries-picked-up-taps-director-819962/I hear Syfy is ordering to production Childhood’s End, a six-hour miniseries adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End from The Social Network producer Michael De Luca and Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind). British helmer Nick Hurran (Doctor Wh0) has come on board to direct the mini, written by Doctor Who writer Matthew Graham. It follows a peaceful alien invasion of Earth by the mysterious Overlords, whose arrival ends all war and turns the planet into a near-utopia. Childhood’s End, produced by UCP and exec produced by De Luca and Goldsman, was one of several long-form projects announced at Syfy’s 2013 upfront, before the network made a change in the top programming post, with Bill McGoldrick replacing Mark Stern. (Stern has since been tapped to run IM Global’s TV venture.) Childhood’s End is the first project from that slate to get a green light at Syfy. Another, The Man In The High Castle, was recently picked up to pilot at Amazon.

variety.com/2014/tv/news/syfy-childhoods-end-miniseries-arthur-c-clarke-1201296831/ Syfy has ordered Arthur C. Clarke’s classic novel “Childhood’s End” as a six-hour miniseries slated for 2015. The novel will be adapted for the screen by Matthew Graham, creator of BBC’s “Life on Mars” and “Ashes to Ashes,” with Universal Cable Productions as the studio. Akiva Goldsman and Mike De Luca are attached as executive producers. Nick Hurran, recent Emmy nominee for “Sherlock: His Last Vow,” will direct. Neville Kidd and Yan Miles, Emmy winners for “Sherlock: His Last Vow” are also set as director of photography and editor, respectively. Originally published in 1953, “Childhood’s End” follows the peaceful alien invasion of earth by the mysterious Overlords, whose arrival begins decades of apparent utopia under indirect alien rule, at the cost of human identity and culture. “As we aggressively develop scripted programming over a diverse creative landscape, we want our content to reflect the greatest sci-fi stories from the past and the present,” said Dave Howe, president of Syfy. “The powerful themes of ‘Childhood’s End,’ from the fearsome price of peace and prosperity, to the very question of what constitutes a human being, remain fascinating and timeless. This will be the most ambitious project for Syfy in many years.” Graham is also developing the BBC America paranormal drama “The Living and the Dead” with his “Mars” and “Ashes” co-creator Ashley Pharoah.
