variety.com/2014/film/news/andy-serkis-jungle-book-origins-set-for-oct-2016-1201273918/Warner Bros. has dated its live-action version of “Jungle Book: Origins” for Oct. 21, 2016 — a year and a week after Disney’s rival project opens. Serkis will also produce with “Harry Potter” scribe Steve Kloves and with Jonathan Cavendish, Serkis’ partner at his London-based production company The Imaginarium. Callie Kloves wrote the adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling stories about a young boy raised by wolves. Disney’s own “Jungle Book” opens Oct. 9, 2015, with Jon Favreau directing and Idris Elba voicing the tiger, Shere Khan. Kipling’s original stories were published in 1894 and are in the public domain. Disney recently cast newcomer Neel Sethi as Mowgli in “The Jungle Book.” Warner Bros. has not yet started casting for its “Jungle Book: Origins.” It is the first feature directing gig for Serkis — although the actor was a second unit director on Peter Jackson’s two “Hobbit” movies, including the barrel chase scene in “The Desolation of Smaug.” Serkis has been a pioneer in performance capture roles as Gollum in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, as King Kong in Jackson’s “King Kong” and as Caesar in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.”

Pushes ‘Jungle Book: Origins’ Back a Year to 2017 Warner Bros. has moved the release of its live-action film “Jungle Book: Origins” back a year until Oct. 6, 2017 — nearly two years after Disney’s rival project opens. Andy Serkis is directing and will also produce with “Harry Potter” scribe Steve Kloves and with Jonathan Cavendish, Serkis’ partner at his London-based production company the Imaginarium. Callie Kloves wrote the adaptation of the Rudyard Kipling stories about a young boy raised by wolves. Disney’s “Jungle Book” opens Oct. 9, 2015, with Jon Favreau directing and Idris Elba voicing the tiger, Shere Khan. Kipling’s original stories were published in 1894 and are in the public domain. “Jungle Book: Origins” is the first title to be dated for October 2017. Benedict Cumberbatch signed on to “Jungle Book: Origins” in August as the voice of the villainous Shere Khan. Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Jack Reynor will also provide voice work. It is the first feature directing gig for Serkis, although the actor was a second unit director on two of Peter Jackson’s “Hobbit” movies, including the barrel chase scene in “The Desolation of Smaug.”
