Mike Stellato has grand hopes for his new downtown business. "My goal is eventually to be a pop-culture supermarket," he said. "Like a one-stop shop for all things geek-related."
First, though, he'll be happy if his store, called MoJoe and Jacks Comics and More, succeeds as it is.
As its name suggests, the store sells comics. And more. Action figures, for example, and superhero T-shirts.
Stellato planned to hold a soft opening this weekend and a grand opening next Friday. The grand opening will feature giveaways and cake. Mmm, cake.
MoJoe and Jacks, named for Stellato's sister and his cat, is at 118 Hay St., next to So Chic Bebe. In a spot once occupied by a yarn and fiber store, the merchandise is all about another sort of yarn - those spun in comic books by Marvel, DC Comics and others.
Stellato, a New York native, said his dad got him into comics when he was a boy. He stayed a fan and, like his dad, also started collecting action figures. He even sculpted and painted them himself. He said his favorite comic book characters are Captain America, who also was his dad's favorite character, and Thor.
"Thor has long hair and a hammer," said Stellato, who also has long hair. "So he's cool." Stellato grinned.
Before opening the Hay Street store, Stellato ran his business online, mostly selling toys. But after his family moved to Fayetteville in 2007, he started thinking about opening a store downtown with toys, comics ... and more.
"Downtown is cool," he said. "There are always people walking around. I like the idea of people walking around and seeing a shop and wanting to go in."
Another plus: "Everybody knows where downtown is," he said.
Stellato said he plans to add more gaming items, more superhero clothing and superhero movies to the store. He said he hopes to get the store to where "people just want to come hang out." (As well as buy stuff.)
"I'm excited," he said.
