Image Comics will bring a version of its Image Expo event to San Diego, the publisher announced Monday, taking place directly before this year's Comic-Con International and in partnership with the massive annual convention.
San Diego's Image Expo is set to start at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, at the Hilton Bayfront -- adjacent to the San Diego Convention Center and a venue for multiple official Comic-Con events. Tickets will be free for Comic-Con attendees, but limited, with information on how to attend still to come.
"In the spirit of trying new things, we're pleased to be partnering with CCI to bring Image Expo to San Diego this July," Image Comics publisher Eric Stephenson said in a statement. "We want to get our message out to as many members of the comics community -- and connect with Image fans outside of our San Francisco Bay Area home -- and felt that taking Expo on the road would be a fun way to do that."
Other than "very special surprise guest creators and even more exciting Image Comics announcements," no further details on the latest incarnation of Image Expo have yet been revealed. The event, in particular Stephenson's announcement-filled keynote address, has certainly built a reputation for being newsworthy -- the most recent Image Expo, held in January in San Francisco, revealed multiple high-profile new projects including "Nameless" from Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham, "Bitch Planet" by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine De Landro and "Wytches" from Scott Snyder and Jock.
The first Image Expo was a three-day event held in February 2012 at the Oakland Convention Center, before moving to a one-day format and San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in July 2013. This forthcoming edition will be the first Image Expo held in Southern California.
