Amazon Announces Cast for Steven Soderbergh ‘Red Oaks’ Comedy Pilot
Amazon Studios announced the full cast for comedy “Red Oaks,” produced by Steven Soderbergh and directed by David Gordon Green (“Pineapple Express,” “Eastbound & Down”), which will join its third pilot wave later this year.
“Red Oaks” stars Craig Roberts (“Submarine”) as David Myers, a college student who’s an assistant tennis pro at the Red Oaks Country Club in suburban New Jersey in 1985. Cast also includes Paul Reiser (“Mad About You”), Richard Kind (“Mad About You,” “Luck”), Jennifer Grey (“It’s Like, You Know”), Oliver Cooper (“Californication”), Gage Golightly (MTV’s “Teen Wolf”) and Ennis Esmer (CTV’s “The Listener”). Guest stars include Josh Meyers, Freddie Roman and Alexandra Socha.
“Red Oaks” is written by Gregory Jacobs (“The Knick”) and Joe Gangemi (“Eliza Graves”). Soderbergh, Green, Jacobs and Gangemi are exec producers.
“To be able to collaborate with Steven, David and Greg, three of the most highly regarded creators in Hollywood, is an absolute pleasure,” said Roy Price, director of Amazon Studios. “‘Red Oaks’ brings together not only top-notch talent, but also a hilarious and wonderfully written script that we think our customers will enjoy seeing come to life later this year.”
According to Soderbergh, Jacobs told him about the idea for “Red Oaks” on the set of HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra” and gave Soderbergh the script for the pilot while they were working on “The Knick.” “We very quickly agreed to approach David because the humor was sharp without being mean, and we felt he would understand and appreciate that,” Soderbergh said.
Other pilots Amazon Studios has in the works for its third bake-off later in 2014, which invite viewer feedback to help determine which to greenlight into full series, are:
“The Cosmopolitans,” half-hour dramedy written, directed and produced by Whit Stillman (“Metropolitan,” “The Last Days of Disco”), about a group of young American expats in Paris;
“Hand of God,” hour-long drama starring Ron Perlman (“Sons of Anarchy”) and directed by Marc Forster (“World War Z”);
“Hysteria,” hour-long thriller created by Shaun Cassidy and starring Mena Suvari as a neurologist investigating a strange illness that hits a teen girl’s competitive dance team Texas that is apparently spread via social media; and
“Point of Honor,” a Civil War-era drama from ABC Studios written by Carlton Cuse (“Lost”) and Randall Wallace.
