The lineup for 2014’s Fantasia international film festival, running July 17-August 5 in Montreal, just keeps getting more exciting. A whole bunch more movies and a couple of very special guests have just been announced.
Receiving this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award will be Tobe Hooper, alongside the Canadian premiere of the new 4K restoration of his classic THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE. Another legendary maverick, Abel Ferrara, will be on hand for the North American premiere of WELCOME TO NEW YORK, his controversial take on the DSK scandal starring Gerard Depardieu and Jacqueline Bisset. Making its international premiere is JU-ON: THE BEGINNING OF THE END, the latest in the long-running supernatural film series, directed by HYPNOSIS’ Masayuki Ochiai. And this year, the fest introduces its Fantasia Underground section, dedicated to the best in international outside cinema; the four features chosen for it are:
• BAG BOY LOVER BOY, in which a hot dog vendor descends into a life of photography and crime, shot on the mean streets of New York by Andres Torres
• BLOODY KNUCKLES, in which Matt O’Mahoney spins a tale of a comic artist’s drawing hand that is hacked off by a vengeful mobster, yet lives on to continue drawing—and killing
• HANA-DAMA: THE ORIGINS, Hisayasu Sata’s saga of high-school girl-on-girl bullying and revenge
• I AM A KNIFE WITH LEGS, the psychedelic story of a famous Europop singer hiding out in Los Angeles to escape a fatwa taken out against him, directed by Bennet Jones.
Also revealed for the Fantasia slate:
• AT THE DEVIL’S DOOR (formerly HOME), Nicholas McCarthy’s follow-up to THE PACT, which employs an unusual narrative structure to tell of a house with a haunted history
• CHEATIN’, in which eccentric animator Bill Plympton delves into troubled romance and noir-esque revenge
• CLOSER TO GOD, award-winning short filmmaker Billy Senese’s feature debut, which retells the Frankenstein story in the modern context of genetic cloning
• CREEP, in which writer/director Patrick Brice and writer Mark Duplass star as, respectively, a videographer and a dying man who hires him to record his last days
• THE CREEPING GARDEN, a hallucinatory documentary on a plasmodial organism with great scientific and social implications, from Tim Grabham and Jasper Sharp
• DANCING KARATE KID, a martial-arts/musical/comedy (with Jackie Chan nowhere to be found) directed by Tsukasa Kishimoto
• THE DEVIL’S MILE, Joseph O’Brien’s horror/road movie in which kidnappers drive onto a stretch of cursed highway
• THE DROWNSMAN, a stalker movie with a watery twist, from director Chad Archibald and the team behind ANTISOCIAL and NEVERLOST
• FIGHT CHURCH, Daniel Junge and Bryan Storkle’s docu on “fight ministries” that combine Christianity with mixed martial arts
• FRANK, about an aspiring musician who joins an art-rock group fronted by a performer (Michael Fassbender) who never removes his large plaster head, directed by Lenny Abrahamson
• FROM VEGAS TO MACAU, an action/comedy marking the return of Chow Yun-Fat to his role from the classic GOD OF GAMBLERS, directed by veteran Wong Jing
• FUKU-CHAN OF FUKUFUKU FLATS, a combination of slapstick and character study by Yosuke Fujita
• HOUSEBOUND, Gerard Johnstone’s SXSW hit (reviewed here) that applies new and sometimes humorous twists to the haunted-house formula
• THE HUNDRED YEAR-OLD MAN WHO CLIMBED OUT THE WINDOW AND DISAPEARED, Felix Herngren’s black comedy based on the best-selling Swedish novel
• INGTOOGI: THE BATTLE OF INTERNET TROLLS, Um Tae-hwa’s social-media comedy in which a pair of on-line enemies take their fight to the real world
• IN ORDER OF DISAPPEARANCE, Hans Petter Moland’s darkly comic saga of the attempts by a father (Stellan Skarsgård) to avenge his murdered son
• JELLYFISH EYES, a celebration of Japanese pop culture that also critiques the country’s institutions, from Takashi Murakami
• KUMIKO THE TREASURE HUNTER, which follows a Tokyo office worker as he goes on a quest to find that stash of loot from the Coen Brothers’ FARGO, directed by David Zellner
• KUNDO: AGE OF THE RAMPANT, Yoon Jong-bin’s period actioner about a gang of outlaws who stand up to tyrannical rulers
• LET US PREY, Brian O’Malley’s grisly horror film set at a police precinct visited by a malevolent stranger, starring THE WOMAN’s Pollyanna McIntosh
• LIFE AFTER BETH, Jeff Baena’s knockout zombie film (review here) that focuses on a young man (Dane DeHaan) dealing with the fact that his girlfriend (Aubrey Plaza) no longer has a pulse
• 3D NAKED AMBITION, Lee Kung Lok’s satire of the adult-film industry and celebrity with an extra dimension
• NO TEARS FOR THE DEAD, in which an assassin comes to side with his target, from Lee Jeong-beom of the great THE MAN FROM NOWHERE
• OPEN WINDOWS, the latest from the great Nacho Vigalondo of TIMECRIMES, starring Elijah Wood as a webmaster who fixation on Sasha Grey leads to mindbending cyber-developments
• STARRY EYES, Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch’s study of an aspiring actress who will do anything—no matter how destructive or disturbing—to succeed in Hollywood (review here)
• STEREO, Maximilian Erlenwein’s crime thriller in which a man’s dark past—which he cannot remember—catches up to him
• SUMMER OF BLOOD, in which writer/director Onur Tukel plays a Williamsburg slacker whose success with the ladies changes when he becomes a vampire
• UGLY, a brutal urban actioner centering on the abduction of an actor’s young daughter, directed by Anurag Kashyap
• WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD, the new movie by indie stalwart Gregg Araki, starring Shailene Woodley as a teenager whose mother (Eva Green) has disappeared
The full schedule for these films and more will be announced July 10; in the meantime, you can find out more at Fantasia’s official website:
