PARIS– Ahead of its launch in France, Netflix is reportedly set to commission an exclusive original series in France, according to news channel’s website BFMTV.
The French report claims Netflix approached select local producers to submit pitches for original series and has chosen an unspecified project, which will be delivered in 2015.
Netflix declined comment. France wouldn’t be the first overseas territory where the company has targeted specific original programming, having already done so in Latin America.
Local journos have speculated that Netflix had a series project lined up at EuropaCorp Television. Addressing the rumors, an exec at EuropaCorp Television told Variety that “Netflix (had) not commissioned a French series to (them) as of today.”
Another potential French ally for Netflix could be Gaumont International Television (GIT), the L.A.-based TV arm of the Gallic major led by former NBC exec Katie O’Connell and Gaumont’s Vice CEO, Christophe Riandee.
Indeed, Netflix has already worked with GIT on Eli Roth’s “Hemlock Grove,” which was reupped for a second season; and recently ordered “Narcos” with Wagner Moura set to play Pablo Escobar.
Although GIT produces primarily English-language series, it also collaborates closely with Gaumont’s Paris-based TV division on some international series projects.
Netflix could also be working with a indie production company like Haut et Court TV, the outfit behind supernatural drama hit “The Returned.”
Per BFMTV, Netflix is on track to launch this fall and will likely be priced at €7.99 (US$10.90) per month for the standard definition service; €8.99 for high definition and reception on two devices and €11.99 for high definition and a reception on four devices.
