Taris Savell: Comics are a medium
Many of yesterday’s comic heroes have morphed into film and TV, but comic books remain a popular must-have.
Harley Orr opened Pensacola Pop Comics at 909 N. 12th Ave. because, “I love reading, especially comics, and I wanted to create a comfortable place for new readers and more-experienced comic fans alike to discover new titles. I want to be your friendly neighborhood comic book shop.”
The 700-square-foot store has thousands of books, and new comics come out every Wednesday. Also, Orr will be adding a collection of older issues later this month.
The store has books for people of all ages and, “there are so many good new books being published today. It’s important to remember that comics aren’t a genre, it's a medium. Superheroes may be synonymous with comics, but there’s so much more out there,” Orr said with the enthusiasm of a businessman and fan.
The store’s inventory includes nonfiction comics, sci-fi, fantasy, espionage, western, crime, humor and some stories that could only exist as a comic.
And there is an etiquette by which comic fans abide.
“I don’t really have a seating area, and I don’t expect to have one,” Orr said. “I’d rather a customer not sit and read, and chances are, the next customer would rather his or her books be unread as well.
“Most of my customers know what they want when they come in. And for those who don’t, I know my books and I’ll suggest and summarize books.”
Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Call 465-3288.
