Netflix and Mattel next year will launch an all-new animated “Ever After High” original series and movie for kids, based on the toymaker’s doll franchise of the teen offspring of fairytale legends.
The Netflix original series will be preceded by a new movie, “Ever After High: Spring Unsprung,” slated to debut in early 2015, with 12 episodes of the series to follow. Both will feature the “royally rebellious” students of Mattel’s “Ever After High,” with the companies promising new twists, turns and characters.
“Ever After High,” to be available to subscribers in all Netflix territories, joins the streamer’s expanding kidvid lineup. Netflix’s broad deal with DreamWorks Animation includes new series “DreamWorks Dragons,” based on the studio’s “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise, along with “Turbo FAST,” “Dinotrux,” “King Julien,” “Puss in Boost” and “VeggieTales in the House.” In addition, Netflix recently reached a deal with Scholastic Media for a new CG-animated “Magic School Bus” series.
“The engaging and magical storylines of ‘Ever After High’ make it a great addition to our growing slate of original kids’ programming,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said. “Mattel has a track record of making high-quality animated programs, and we’re excited to extend our relationship, bringing our members the enchanting world of ‘Ever After High.’”
Netflix is “the perfect home for developing and expanding the already enchanting world of ‘Ever After High,’” added Michael Riley, VP franchise development and content distribution at Mattel.
“Ever After High” characters include Apple White (daughter of Snow White) and Raven Queen (daughter of the Evil Queen); Lizzie Hearts (daughter of the Queen of Hearts); Cedar Wood (daughter of Pinocchio); Dexter Charming (son of King Charming); and Cerise Hood (daughter of Little Red Riding Hood). Animated short-form webisodes of “Ever After High,” produced by Mattel Playground Prods., are currently available on Netflix and EverAfterHigh.com.
