Netflix is working with DreamWorks Animation on another children’s series, ordering of three seasons of “Dinotrux” featuring robotic dinosaur characters, set to debut on the service starting in the spring of 2015.
The series is based on Chris Gall’s “Dinotrux” books, set in a world of lava-spewing volcanoes, lush forests and a cast of half-dinosaur, half-mechanical creatures.
“Dinotrux” is the latest of Netflix original kids’ series from DWA. The streamer debuted “Turbo FAST” in December 2013 and has announced three of new shows slated for 2014 — “King Julien,” “Puss in Boots” and “VeggieTales in the House” — and “DreamWorks Dragons,” set to air in 2015.
Netflix has been ramping up its children’s content, as it fights Amazon in the subscription VOD space. This week, Netflix announced a pact with Scholastic Media to launch an original TV series based on “The Magic School Bus” science book and television franchise to hit in 2016.
“Dinotrux” is “a property that creates a new world with stunning visuals and fantastic action combined with great characters and comedy,” said Margie Cohn, DWA’s head of television. “In Dinotrux, the biggest guy and the smallest creature become best friends and through their unique partnership evolve their primitive world – a theme that we think will resonate with kids.”
“DreamWorks has a proven track record of creating beloved characters and we’re excited to be able to bring the Dinotrux friends to our members,” Cindy Holland, VP of originals at Netflix, said in a statement.
