Just tossed out at the foot of an article about something else entirely, Aint It Cool have said, matter of factly, that the release date for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been pushed back into 2017.
Previously, a June 2016 release date was announced for the film. Or… was it?
Sony slotted two pictures that they were calling The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4 into their schedule. These were provisional titles. Even at the very moment in time these dates became public, there were no plans for an Amazing Spider-Man 4 per se.
Shortly after, Sony announced that spin-off movies relating to Venom and The Sinister Six were coming. It’s one of these – and Venom, I believe – that was meant for the May 4th 2018 slot. I’m curious to see how they make a Venom movie into the culmination of their Spider-crossover.
So, could it be that June 2016 was always just where The Sinister Six was supposed to be?
Okay, that much isn’t entirely clear, but I do consider it a real possibility. When Sony brass started this by just calling all of the films in the franchise Amazing Spider-Man Some Number Or Another, they started tangling wires. I still see people who should know better writing about The Amazing Spider-Man 4 like it exists,
Of course, there are plenty of reasons that an Amazing Spider-Man 3 might have more recently have been pushed back. For one thing, there’s been a parting of the ways between the series’ writers and producers Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci. For another, the last film slightly underperformed and so there could be some regrouping going on at Camp Spidey.
And there’s always the possibility that the big arc they’re planning for these three films just needs a bit more juggling around, or maybe The Sinister Six was just getting behind schedule a touch (though I’m not sure about that, it seems to be coming together).
Anyway, there’s no Amazing Spider-Man 4 on the To Do. There never was, and no contracts are in place for such a film. After Sony near the end of planning out this next block with 3, Sinister Six and Venom (though almost certainly not in that order), then they’ll have to really think about how to move on and keep things spinning.
And what to do if Andrew Garfield can’t be tempted back for more… Venom 2 and 3, anyone?
