For nearly 30 years, a comic book shop in east downtown Dearborn has been providing the area with comics, pop culture products and a family-friendly atmosphere.
Dubbed Green Brain Comcis in 2001, the comic book store’s co-owner and purchaser, Dan Merritt, recently submitted information to The News-Herald Newspapers to share the business’ story.
How did your business get started?
Originally owned by Gary Reed and dubbed “Comics Plus,” Green Brain Comics was one of a chain of stores in the metro Detroit area. My wife, Katie, started working for the chain 26 years ago. Katie and I purchased the store in 1999, renamed it Green Brain Comics in 2001, and we haven’t looked back since.
Why did you choose the location your business calls home?
We purchased the business in 1999, when it resided in a smallish storefront. We moved into our current building in 2002 after outgrowing the existing space.
This year, we are purchasing a building in the same neighborhood, 13936 Michigan Ave., and will be working on getting it ready to move in by the end of the summer.
East downtown has been home to our business since the beginning in 1985. With all the great stuff happening in the district, we expect many successful things to come.
Comic books, minicomics, graphic novels and collecting supplies.
What do you want your business to be best known for?
Products you can’t find anywhere else, and a great atmosphere where you can take your kids, parents and grandparents.
What is your most popular service or product?
Comic books.
What’s something no one knows about your business?
Our store name was inspired by my grandfather’s misspelled dog tags.
Green Brain Comics is currently at 13210 Michigan Ave., in east downtown Dearborn. The business will be moving to 13936 Michigan Ave. by summer’s end.
