variety.com/2014/film/news/force-majuere-u-s-distribution-1201195213/Magnolia Pictures has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to director Ruben Ostlund’s “Force majeure” following its Un Certain Regard jury prize win at the Cannes Film Festival. “Force majeure” tells the story of a Swedish family vacationing in the French Alps when a looming avalanche turns everything upside down. The anticipated disaster fails to occur, but a marriage crumbles as a result. Variety‘s Peter Debruge wrote in his review that the film was “emotionally perceptive almost to a fault.” The Sweden-France-Denmark-Norway production stars Johannes Bah Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Clara Wettergren, Vincent Wettergren, Kristofer Hivju and Fanni Metelius. The deal was negotiated for Magnolia by John Von Thaden and Dori Begley with Olimpia Pont Chafer for Coproduction Office. “Force majeure” has been sold to most markets, including Australia/New Zealand (Sharmill Films), France (Bac Films with Distrib Films), Germany (Alamode), Italy (Teodora), Spain (Golem) and UK/Ireland (Artificial Eye).
