Netflix Orders Sequel to Will Smith’s Bright, Renews Dark
Netflix has been releasing plenty of new content to binge this winter, and while it hasn’t even been released, the streaming service has ordered a follow up to the movie Bright. Its recently released cult-hit series Dark has also been renewed for a second season.
Bright is the first Netflix foray into producing a major Hollywood blockbuster. With director David Ayer of Suicide Squad at the helm and mega star Will Smith in the lead, it seems destined to become a smash. Bright combines the popular style of gritty cop story with epic fantasy, and Netflix is trying to turn the release of the film into an event. It’s unknown how many people are actually going to stream it, but the company was confident enough to invest $90 million. According to Bloomberg, the sequel will be part of and $8 billion, 80 film order Netflix is planning on in 2018.
Dark has been more of a cult sensation, but is also a significant investment. A German series (available with English subtitles or dub) in the Stranger Things mold, it features teens investigating strange happenings as they traverse their small community on bikes. Netflix announced a follow up season, featuring more mystery, personal drama and time travel.
The $8 billion dollars Netflix is putting towards 2018 programming is a significant amount. That’s more than competing TV networks like NBC or CBS, as well as competing streaming services like Amazon. It’s even a bigger budget than sports behemoth ESPN.
Premiering Dec. 22 on Netflix, Bright also stars Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, Edgar Ramirez, Ike Barinholtz, Enrique Murciano, Jay Hernandez, Andrea Navedo, Veronica Ngo, Alex Meraz, Margaret Cho, Brad William Henke, Dawn Olivieri, and Kenneth Choi.
Written by Jantje Friese and directed Baran bo Odar, Dark is a mystery/drama/thriller series. It is currently available to stream on Netflix.
