In many ways, the debut of Richard Linklater‘s new film Boyhood at the Eccles Theater personifies the independent spirit.
In a studio movie like The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Brad Pitt was aged with makeup and VFX over the course of your typical shoot.
Linklater had no budget line for that in his movie, so he merely shot and then put the camera down each year for 12 years, so his cast could age naturally.
The film stars Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, but the most profound ager in this movie is newcomer Ellar Coltrane, who goes naturally from boyhood to manhood.
IFC has been involved in this since the beginning, but I am hearing that buyers will be there anyway.
If there’s some big offer for theatrical distribution, conversations will ensue.
