Darren Star Prepping Paris-Set Dramedy for Paramount Network (Exclusive)
Yes, there's a little bit of Carrie Bradshaw in it.
Viacom is looking to Darren Star to deliver his next hit for its soon-to-launch general entertainment hub Paramount Network.
The Sex and the City and Younger creator is developing a half-hour comedy for Paramount Network, which will launch Jan. 18 when it is rebranded from Spike TV.
The half-hour dramedy is about a young American girl who wants to change her life and goes to Paris for a life-changing experience — and ends up staying.
Star, who has an overall deal with Viacom, is writing the script. Jax Media's Tony Hernandez is exec producing. The untitled dramedy expands Star's relationship with Jax Media, who currently produce TV Land's signature hit Younger.
"It's cinematic," Paramount Network (TV Land and CMT) president Kevin Kay told THR as part of an Executive Suite interview. "That could be a big Paramount show. There’s a little bit of Carrie Bradshaw in that it draws on what he didn't get to do in Paris on [HBO's] Sex and the City. We either pilot or go straight to series on that."
Star signed an overall deal with Viacom in March 2016. His Sutton Foster starrer Younger continues to reach new highs, with its recently concluded fourth season ranking as its highest-rated and most-watched in series history. The dramedy is already renewed for a fifth season.
Paramount Network will launch Jan. 18 with scripted originals Waco (originally picked up for Spike), Heathers, American Woman (both developed at TV Land) and Yellowstone, with the latter Taylor Sheridan drama picked up straight to series as its first original for the cabler. Paramount Network is also teaming with Kyle Killen (Awake) to develop female-driven spy thriller Velvet, based on the Image Comics graphic novel of the same name. The cabler is also redeveloping its First Wives Club reboot for Paramount after TV Land went to pilot on the project.
Star is repped by UTA.
