Japanese Mobile Gaming Company Akatsuki Launches U.S. Film Production Arm
Akatsuki Entertainment USA will aim to develop partnerships on IP between Hollywood and Japan, including content for its gaming business and original Japanese content.
Japanese mobile gaming company Akatsuki Inc. is launching an LA-based production arm to develop, finance and produce feature films and other content.
The new company, Akatsuki Entertainment USA, will aim for "partnerships between Hollywood and Japanese companies to acquire, develop and produce commercially driven intellectual properties."
"Our goal is to produce original and distinctive films of the highest quality to excite and move audiences not only in United States or Japan but the whole world," said Tetsuro Kouda, who will oversee the US operations for Akatsuki.
Akatsuki Entertainment USA will be headed by Annmarie Sairrino Bailey, previously of All Nippon Entertainment Works (ANEW,) a government-backed operation set up to sell Japanese IP to Hollywood.
Sandy Climan, also previously of ANEW, has been appointed as a senior advisor to the new venture and its parent company. Climan was CEO of ANEW from 2012 until its sale this summer. The public-private fund recorded years of losses and no completed projects before being sold to a Japanese private equity firm for a knockdown price in June.
Akatsuki Inc. is a fast-growing mobile gaming company and has produced hits including Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle, co-developed with Bandai Namco Entertainment. Its stock price has more than tripled over the last year, taking its market capitalization over the $1 billion mark.
