Producer Robert A. Goldston Dies at 88
Film, television, and theater producer Robert A. Goldston died on September 23 from complications due to Crohn’s disease. He was 88.
Goldston got his start in entertainment on the radio show “Let’s Pretend.” After attending Harvard Law School and briefly working as a lawyer, he went to work with Screen Gems/Columbia before becoming the president of NTA Production,s where he created the Peabody Award winning series “Play of the Week,” a series of 67 Broadway-like productions for television.
He produced films like “The Bofors Gun,” “Murder By Decree,” “The Bell Jar” and “Mandela.” His Playpix Productions produced off-Broadway plays and earned Goldston a reputation for creating thoughtful, high-quality productions. The “American Film Theater,” which he created after the success of “Play of the Week,” attracted stars like Katherine Hepburn, Paul Scofield, Gene Wilder, and Jeff Bridges.
Goldston was a vocal advocate of compassion and fought against racial and social subjugation. He worked on community housing projects; protested the Vietnam War; and supported ACLU as he fought with them against the actions of President Nixon and the FBI in attempts to quell free speech, wiretap citizens and perform many other highly questionable actions.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Judith; his son James; daughter-in- law Veronika; and grandson Sam.
