Orion Pictures has made its first significant hire since being relaunched earlier this month by MGM to be the new stand-alone theatrical marketing and distribution outfit for the U.S. Dan Kagan, who just left Sony Pictures Entertainment, had been named vp, production and acquisitions, reporting to Orion president John Hegeman. Kagan will begin his new role at the company on Monday and will be responsible for managing the development, production and acquisition of feature films on behalf of Orion. “Dan is sharp and passionate about what he does. He understands the creative process and has a keen eye for what we are looking for at Orion. His instincts and filmmaker friendly attitude will be vital to our success as we build out Orion’s slate,” Hegeman said Tuesday in a statement. Serving as director of development at Sony, Kagan oversaw the development of feature films including Flatliners and Rough Night and worked on titles such as The Magnificent Seven with MGM and The Dark Tower. He also has served stints at Break Media as well as MGM, Paramount Pictures and Ars Nova Entertainment. Orion has a goal of releasing four to six modestly budgeted films a year. The company’s first offering will be the YA romancer Every Day, which is currently set for a Feb. 2, 2018, release and stars Angourie Rice, Maria Bello and Debby Ryan.
