WME Signs Podcasting Company Panoply Media (Exclusive)
The agency will look to adapt Panoply projects into films, television shows and live events.
Podcasting company Panoply Media has signed with WME, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The agency will work with Panoply to adapt its audio stories into films, television shows and live events.
Started by The Slate Group, the two-year-old Panoply both creates and acquires podcasts for its network. In addition to offering production capabilities, it also sells advertising for the podcasts within its network. It is behind Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History and fictional series The Message. It also works with such companies as BuzzFeed, First Look Media, Vox Media and The Wall Street Journal. And it creates branded podcasts with companies including GE, Netflix and HBO Documentaries.
Earlier this month, Panoply announced a fall slate of podcasts that include its first scripted comedy, Dexter Guff Is Smarter Than You, and the Sam Dingman-hosted Family Ghosts.
"We're dedicated to creating compelling content for our listeners and continue to invest in a wide variety of original programming, including highly produced nonfiction series, scripted comedy and drama, and culture and lifestyle podcasts," Panoply CEO Brendan Monaghan said in a statement. "We're thrilled to work with WME to bring these stories to new forms of media and entertainment."
Podcasting has caught Hollywood's attention over the last several years after the breakout success of Serial. A number of podcasts currently are being adapted for film and television, including horror anthology Lore and scripted thriller Homecoming, both of which have sold to Amazon.
For its part, WME has built up a large roster of podcasting clients. In addition to Panoply, it represents Pod Save America producer Crooked Media, Midroll Media, Limetown producer Two Up and Freakonomics Radio host Stephen Dubner.
