HBO Greenlights First Scandinavian Original Series
Swedish director Lukas Moodysoon will write and direct 'Gosta,' the first original from HBO Nordic.
HBO Europe has greenlit its first-ever Scandinavian original series, ordering Gosta, an eight-episode drama, from Swedish director Lukas Moodysson (Together, Lilya 4-Ever).
Moodysson will write and direct all eight episodes of the series, which follows a 28-year-old child psychologist who gets his first job in a small rural town and tries to put his theories of universal kindness into practice – with mixed results.
Gosta will be Moodysson's first-ever television series. Memfis Film is producing for HBO, with TrustNordisk handling international sales.
The series will be shot on location in Sweden in 2018 for an expected 2019 premiere.
"I want Gosta to be a mix of comedy and Dostoyevsky; as funny as possible and as serious as possible," said Moodysson.
"It´s a joy and honor to produce HBO Nordic’s first Scandinavian original series. HBO is perfect for Gosta's wilful mix of comedy and drama," added producer Lars Jonsson of Memfis Film.
Hanne Palmquist, commissioning editor & vp original programming, HBO Nordic, said: "Gosta is an insightful, fun, multi-faceted and bitter-sweet story that says a lot about the time we are living in, in a way only Lukas can say it."
Moodysson became known with his directorial breakthrough Show Me Love in 1998, which won four Guldbagge Awards, Sweden’s biggest film honor.
"Lukas’s unique voice has established him as a leading filmmaker both in Sweden and worldwide, and his vision for this series makes it a perfect fit as our first original commission from HBO Nordic," said Antony Root, executive vp, original programming and production at HBO Europe. "The unlikely hero at its heart will not only be recognizable to our Swedish audience, but will have resonance with our audiences across Europe, and internationally too."
